Meteor Deep: depth and source profile

This surveyed section of Meteor Deep reaches approximately 8,266 meters below the EGM96 geoid.

Meteor Deep, South Sandwich Trench · South Atlantic · 2019 grid. Depth below EGM96 geoid · 75-meter survey grid: 8266.3 meters, data-derived estimate.
Data-derived water-column section at equal horizontal and vertical scale. Surface at top; depth increases downward. 401 unchanged 75-meter raster cell centers along a 30-kilometer section. Depth is negative raster elevation. No interpolation, missing-cell filling, datum transformation or vertical exaggeration. Straight segments connect measured cells; they are not additional soundings.

A little more perspective

401 unchanged 75-meter raster cell centers along a 30-kilometer section. Depth is negative raster elevation. No interpolation, missing-cell filling, datum transformation or vertical exaggeration. Straight segments connect measured cells; they are not additional soundings. The section reaches 8266.2578125 meters at -55.230360°, -26.173555°. Stored decimals preserve the raster value, not centimeter accuracy. Both ends remain underwater.

The Five Deeps study reports 8,265 ± 13 meters at Meteor Deep, the deepest site in the South Sandwich Trench in that survey. The published analysis and this archived grid are separate results. Neither the profile nor its vertical datum has been adjusted to force agreement. The acquisition report identifies EGM96 as its geoid reference.

Meteor Deep lies near 55.23° S. Despite the trench extending toward Antarctica, this site is in the Atlantic under the study’s 60° S ocean boundary. Compare it with Factorian Deep to see why the deepest point in a trench need not be the deepest point in the neighboring ocean.

Quick facts

This surveyed section of Meteor Deep reaches approximately 8,266 meters below the EGM96 geoid.
