How to compare heights and share your scene
Choose subjects, check their measurement definitions, compare them at one scale, and export an image with source notes. A practical guide to What’s Taller?.
How do I build a height comparison?
- Choose your subjects. Open the object browser and add the things you want to compare. Search by name or browse a category. The height library lists every available record.
- Check what each height measures. Select an object to read its facts and sources. A tower’s antenna, a statue’s pedestal, or a dinosaur’s pose can change the meaning of the number.
- Arrange the scene. Drag subjects across the ground, or switch between side-by-side and overlay views. Pan and zoom to inspect details; fit the scene to bring the visible lineup back into view.
- Add a familiar reference. Use “Add yourself” to enter a height. Choose meters or feet for the display. All subjects keep the same relative scale.
- Save the explanation with the picture. Open Share to copy the scene link, download the image, and save its source notes.
How many times as tall is one object?
Divide the taller height by the shorter height, using the same unit for both. The result is a ratio. Subtract the shorter height from the taller height when you want the difference instead.
The tower’s 330-meter height includes its antenna. The 1.75-meter human reference is an adjustable example, not a global average. State those assumptions alongside the calculation so someone else can reproduce it.
Use “times as tall” for the ratio and “meters taller” for the difference. These phrases make two different answers easy to tell apart.
Are height, elevation, length, and wingspan the same?
No. Height describes a vertical distance with a defined starting point. Elevation usually describes a location above a reference level, such as sea level. Length runs along an object; wingspan runs from wingtip to wingtip.
Height mode aligns subjects on a common ground line. A mountain’s summit elevation would not automatically describe its base-to-summit height. A dragon’s length would not establish its standing height. Check the measurement definition before treating two numbers as a like-for-like comparison.
The Statue of Liberty record, for example, measures ground to torch and includes the pedestal. The statue by itself is a different height.
How do length and wingspan comparisons work?
Choose “Lengths and spans” in the Compare selector. The browser then offers horizontal measurements such as the blue whale’s length, the wandering albatross’s wingspan, and the manta ray’s disc width. The artwork keeps its natural orientation and aligns at its lower edge. That edge is not a standing-height or seafloor datum. Switching comparison dimensions starts a new compatible lineup.
Each label names the measured dimension. A whale’s length and a bird’s wingspan are both distances, but they describe different anatomical endpoints. Shared links retain the mode and labels; source notes retain the measurement definitions.
How do planetary diameters work?
Choose “Globe diameters” to compare Earth, moons, planets, and the Sun. This mode starts in kilometers. Most records double JPL’s mean radius; the Sun uses a stated IAU nominal convention. Read the reference page for the original radius and its uncertainty.
The globes are interpretive spherical illustrations. Saturn’s rings, extended atmospheres, and the Sun’s corona are excluded. Their lower edges align for reading sizes; the gaps between them do not represent orbital distances. Switching back to Heights starts a compatible ground-based comparison in meters.
How are athletes and celebrities illustrated?
Athletes and celebrities can use recognizable full-body illustrations. Each is labeled as an illustrated likeness, not an authentic photograph or endorsement. Some records still use a clearly labeled generic figure while their artwork is being completed. Records distinguish official listings, self-reports, interview profiles, and billed wrestling heights. Check the source, date, rounding, and footwear note. These claims do not establish a new barefoot measurement, and an illustrated arm length does not establish standing reach.
The sourced height controls the comparison. Facial details, body proportions, clothing, and footwear remain interpretive; they are not additional body measurements. Keep the artwork label with downloaded images and source notes.
How should I compare fictional subjects?
Name the version and keep the evidence label. The Godzilla record uses a reported 119.8-meter height for the 2019 MonsterVerse incarnation. It does not describe every film version.
The Vhagar record uses an adjustable 30-meter illustration assumption. It is not a confirmed canonical standing height. If you change that number, explain the result as a what-if: “At an assumed standing height of 30 meters…”
The same care applies to reconstructions. The T. rex illustration’s posed head height is different from the measured hip height of a named specimen.
How do I export or share a comparison?
Use Share in the playground. A scene link stores the chosen subjects, custom heights, positions, visibility, units, and layout mode in the URL fragment. Opening that link restores the lineup and fits it into view. A custom personal height becomes visible to anyone who receives the link.
The PNG download includes the visible comparison and whatstaller.com attribution at the bottom right. Download the source notes too: they preserve the subject names, height definitions, sources, and estimate labels that a picture can leave out.
For a report or presentation, add a short caption describing the question and the measurement choices. Keep the attribution and check the reuse terms and artwork credits. Site permissions do not grant rights to third-party characters or trademarks.
Why does a person look so small beside a skyscraper?
That is what a shared scale looks like. The renderer does not enlarge the smaller subject to make it easier to see. Zoom in or use “Take a closer look” to inspect it; the text measurements remain available when an illustration is tiny.
Artwork helps you picture the difference, but it is interpretive. Numeric heights, measurement definitions, and source notes carry the factual comparison.
