A little more perspective
Emlyn Thomas’s 1982 American Alpine Journal account distinguishes Masherbrum’s 7,821-meter northeast summit from its 7,806-meter southwest summit. The selected section centers the main northeast summit area, reaching approximately 7,785 meters in the Copernicus EGM2008 surface. A single name does not make the two summit references interchangeable. The dataset’s broad samples cannot resolve the exact rock-and-snow endpoint of an expedition measurement.
The local-relief view subtracts the lowest sampled point in this section: 4422.3 meters at 35.611111° latitude, 76.369167° longitude. This produces about 3,362 meters of relief within the stated boundary. It is not a universal mountain base, a route’s total ascent, or topographic prominence.
The rendered surface uses the public 2021 Copernicus release, primarily based on TanDEM-X observations from 2011–2015 with infill from other sources. It is a surface model rather than a current bare-earth survey. Neutral shading explains the geometry without claiming a snow season or photographic ground texture. No datum conversion or summit correction is applied.
