Mariana Trench: depth and source profile

This 2020 Challenger Deep grid section reaches approximately 10,927 meters below the EGM96 geoid.

Mariana Trench, Challenger Deep · 2020 grid section. Depth below EGM96 geoid · 100-meter grid: 10927.4 meters, data-derived estimate.
Data-derived water-column section at equal horizontal and vertical scales. Surface at top; depth increases downward. 401 untouched 100-meter raster cell centers along a 40-kilometer section through the local Challenger Deep minimum. Depth is negative raster elevation. No interpolation, datum transformation or vertical exaggeration. Straight lines between source samples show sampling, not additional measurements.

A little more perspective

The section contains 401 unchanged cell-center depths at 100-meter spacing along one north–south UTM grid column. Its deepest cell is 10,927.36328125 meters below the EGM96 geoid, at 11.372528° N, 142.597819° E. The extra decimals preserve the stored grid value; they do not indicate centimeter survey accuracy. Both ends of the 40-kilometer section remain underwater, so the water-column rectangle does not represent coastlines.

The PD20MT01 acquisition report identifies WGS84 horizontal coordinates and the EGM96 geoid. No vertical datum transformation, interpolation or vertical exaggeration was applied. An independent analysis of June 2020 pressure measurements reports 10,935 ± 6 meters below mean sea level. That result uses a different measurement method and reference surface and is not used to stretch this raster.

Quick facts

This 2020 Challenger Deep grid section reaches approximately 10,927 meters below the EGM96 geoid.
