Quetzalcoatlus northropi wingspan: how wide are its wings?

The American Museum of Natural History gives Quetzalcoatlus northropi a wingspan of around ten meters. This top-down restoration compares the distance between the fully extended wingtips.

Interpretive restoration. Horizontal extended wingtip-to-wingtip span in dorsal plan view defines the selected dimension; other anatomy and coloration are illustrative.

A little more perspective

AMNH’s species card uses approximately ten meters, with a rounded 33 feet alongside it. UT Austin’s 2021 account describes a span nearing 40 feet, showing the uncertainty in reconstructions from limited remains. This scene selects the AMNH reference and does not average those estimates.

The dorsal plan view keeps both wings in one plane, with the long beak pointing forward. The membrane outline, body covering and coloration are interpretive. Head-to-tail length and standing height use different endpoints and cannot be read from the selected ten-meter wingspan.
