How tall is Paraceratherium?

Larramendi’s 2016 review illustrates a large Paraceratherium transouralicum reconstruction at approximately 4.8 meters at the shoulder. The fragmentary remains make this a qualified estimate.

Paraceratherium, P. transouralicum · large-remains shoulder estimate. Qualified extrapolated shoulder-height estimate · approximately 4.8 meters: 4.8 meters, illustrative estimate.
Interpretive restoration. Foot-contact to shoulder calibration excludes the head above it. Body proportions and skin are illustrative.

A little more perspective

The review’s Appendix 1 identifies the large-remains reconstruction as AMNH 26168/75 and gives about 480 centimeters at the shoulder. It explicitly cautions against treating that size as firmly established. The value is extrapolated from incomplete material, not a measured complete individual.

The long neck raises the head above the shoulder marker. Skin texture, soft tissues and exact body proportions are interpretive; they do not turn the estimate into a verified maximum for the genus. Shoulder height is calibrated below the highest head point.
