How long is a dunkleosteus terrelli?

Engelman’s 2023 study reconstructs typical adult Dunkleosteus at roughly 3.3 to 3.5 meters long. This illustration selects 3.5 meters and follows the shorter, deeper-bodied interpretation.

A little more perspective

The 2023 analysis uses head proportions to estimate whole-body length and places typical adults around 3.3 to 3.5 meters. The selected upper value is not the study’s largest possible individual. It replaces neither a measured complete body nor every earlier reconstruction, because the postcranial outline is incompletely known.

The deep armored front and compact tapering body follow the study’s revised proportions. Cutting jaw plates are shown instead of rows of separate teeth. Fin form, skin coverage over armor and coloration remain interpretive; the selected measurement runs from the snout to the tail tip.
