China Three Gorges lists maximum dam height as 181 meters and crest elevation as 185 meters. The first is a vertical dimension of the dam; the second locates its crest within an elevation reference.
The illustration represents a bounded dam section rather than the entire long barrier across the valley. Foundation and crest are the anchors. Reservoir levels, spillway discharge and power-house machinery do not alter this structural-height reference. The measurement ends at crest level below the raised gate-control structures.
