A little more perspective
Computer Graphics World’s February 2003 interview feature with visual-effects supervisor Jim Rygiel describes the first film’s cave troll as an 18-foot-tall character. This record uses that 5.4864-meter production reference for The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), rather than a generic height for every troll in Middle-earth.
The feature explains that later cave trolls were based on the original model, built from scans of a Weta Workshop sculpture. The selected number describes the fictional character, not that smaller sculpture. The illustration uses a natural standing pose and nominal overall height; no exact anatomical measuring endpoint is supplied by the source.
Quick facts
The cave troll from the first Lord of the Rings film uses the 18-foot character height reported in contemporary Weta production coverage.
